FOMC News Trading Forex: The Fed Day We Read Gold Wrong (29 July 2026)
Dylan Forexia9 min read
FOMC news trading in forex means trading around the Federal Reserve's decision at 14:00 New York and its press conference at 14:30. Most plans ask which way the dollar goes. This page shows a Fed day where our read failed before the Fed said a word: gold on 29 July 2026, when a close back came and the hunt carried on.

We name the read On FOMC, and that page has what it means and how often the decision candle holds the day. What FOMC means in forex explains the committee. The FOMC trading section of our news guide sets the Fed beside NFP and CPI. This page is the case they leave out, a read that was wrong, and what can be learned from it. All times are New York, a candle is named by when it opens, and on gold we count $1 as 1 pip.
FOMC news trading forex: when are the decisions, and what do traders do?
The Fed's committee publishes its meeting calendar in advance. Our calendar files show the decision at 14:00 and the press conference at 14:30 on six days in 2026: 18 March, 29 April, 17 June, 29 July, 16 September and 28 October. The Fed's page also lists meetings ending 28 January and 9 December, which our files do not cover.
Those two known minutes are News-Induced Liquidity on the largest scale. An FOMC forex strategy from a guide usually means one of three things. Position before 14:00 on a view of hawkish or dovish. Trade the break after 14:00. Or wait until the press conference is over, since one answer can turn the market. We have seen no dated record for any of them. What follows is not a fourth plan. It is what happened on one day, including our own mistake.
What happened to gold on 29 July 2026?
The read looked right for about an hour, then wrong. Nothing medium or high-impact from the US was on our calendar before the decision, so the morning moved with no release to explain it.
- The night. The Asian Box ran 4010.05 to 4044.61, 35 pips. It had already dipped under Tuesday's low of 4011.34 at 21:00.
- London. Its first three candles closed just over the top, reaching 4047.64, 3 pips over. Then it drifted down inside the box, ending at 4032.61.
- 08:15. A 14-pip fall to 4013.03. The crowd's 20 EMA crossed under its 50 on this candle.
- 08:30, the close back. Open 4012.97, low 4008.97, close 4020.78. It traded 1 pip under the box and 2 under Tuesday's low, and closed 11 pips back inside. That is The Close Back. Nothing medium or high-impact was on our calendar at 08:30 that day, so this was not a news minute.
- 09:45. The stop hunt, what most traders call a liquidity sweep, resumed. The candle reached 4002.28 and closed at 4007.03, 3 pips under the box.
- 10:00, the real low. 3995.66, 14 pips under the box and 13 past the 08:30 low. The candle closed at 3999.11.
That is the wrong read. A close back says the run past the level may be done, and this one was not done. It came too early, and 13 more pips went.

Could the 08:30 close back have been seen as weak?
Afterwards, a little. That candle went 1 pip past the box. Our counts draw the line between a touch and a hunt at 3% of the average day, about 2.5 pips on gold that day, so by that stricter line it was only a touch. We cannot claim that would have saved anyone. Plenty of deeper runs get overrun too, and the count below shows how many. The honest filing is that the read was wrong, and that a close back promises nothing.
Here is that count, for all days from 6 April to 1 October 2026, on seven majors and gold. On box edges traded past by at least 3% of the average day, the candle that took the edge also closed back inside on 279 occasions. On 217 of those 279 a later candle went past its wick the same day. Across all 969 box edges that closed back, it was 620.
Did the Fed's decision turn gold?
No. We read the decision as carrying a turn already under way. Look at what came before 14:00.
- 11:15. A close back inside at 4010.28, by a fifth of a pip. Two closes under again followed, at 11:45 and 12:00.
- 12:15. A close at 4016.32, 6 pips inside. No candle closed under the box again that day.
- 13:00. A high of 4050.45, 6 pips over the top of the box and 55 pips off the low, an hour before the decision. The only medium item on our calendar nearby was a Canadian one at 13:30.
Then the two known minutes.
- 14:00, the decision. Open 4042.78, high 4085.88, close 4080.78: up 38 pips, and 4 pips through Tuesday's high of 4081.76 at its best. The 20 EMA crossed over the 50 on this candle, four hours after the low.
- 14:30, the press conference. A 34-pip candle, 15 under its open and 19 over it, closing at 4083.01.
- 15:00. The high of the day, 4116.10, 120 pips off the low and 71 over the box.
- 16:00. Back at 4042.47, 74 pips down, under the top of the box. The day closed at 4066.59.
So the morning's low held and the high was hunted too. Our weekly markup files both sides hunted, and the revenge-trading section of our psychology guide looks at what such a day does to a trader. Reading it as "the Fed sent gold up" misses the four hours in which it had already turned, and misses the 74 pips it gave back in about an hour after the high. For gold's own habits on these days, see our gold trading guide.
Does a close back ever hold through the Fed?
Yes, and the day looks much the same until it is over. USD/CHF on Wednesday 17 June 2026 had an 18-pip box, 0.79141 to 0.79324. Nothing for the franc was on our calendar. The 03:00 candle closed under the box at 0.79119, and the 03:15 candle reached 0.79097, 4 pips under it and the low of the day. The 04:15 candle closed back inside at 0.79185.
That low was not passed again in the ten hours to the decision, through US retail sales at 08:30. The 05:15 candle did close a fraction under the box, at 0.79138, and then price stayed in and around the box until 14:00. The decision candle opened at 0.79243, reached 0.79687 and closed at 0.79666, up 42 pips. The press conference candle had a 27-pip range, 16 under its open and 12 over it, and closed at 0.79507. The high was 0.80150 at 15:30, 105 pips off the low.

Read together, the two days give no rule for telling them apart. One close back came in London with ten hours to go and one in New York with five and a half. Two days cannot say which matters, if either does. The run past the box was short on both. Another Fed week is in the markups of 14 September 2026, and why price spikes both ways on FOMC takes the decision candle itself.
How often does a close back last on a Fed day?
Less often than the morning suggests, and the decision itself can be what ends it. We took the four Fed days from 29 April to 16 September 2026, on seven majors and gold, and every box edge traded past by at least 3% of the average day that then closed back before 14:00. We set every other market-day from 6 April to 1 October beside them.
| After the close back | Four Fed days | Every other day |
|---|---|---|
| Box edges closed back before 14:00 | 31 | 895 |
| Price went past the furthest point before 14:00 | 19 | 562 |
| Price went past it from 14:00 to 17:00 | 5 | 27 |
| Price did not go past it by 17:00 | 7 | 306 |
The line to read is the one from 14:00. Of the close backs still unbroken at 14:00, the afternoon undid 5 of 12 on the four Fed days and 27 of 333 on other days. That fits the idea that the decision can overrun a level the morning thought was settled.
The limits sit right beside it. Four Fed days and eight markets that move together on one dollar are a very small sample. It counts candles, not trades, with no entry, stop or cost. Gold's 08:30 close back is not in it either, because that candle fell short of the 3% line. Gold's bottom edge enters at the 09:45 candle, closes back at 11:15 and is one of the 7. It says nothing about what to do. A reversal seen afterwards is not a setup, and our own fixed-rule test around high-impact releases lost money, as our news trading guide sets out.
What did each seat see on 29 July?
The Three Seats split that morning.
- Retail had its eye on 14:00. By 13:00 price had already come 55 pips off the low, and the 74-pip fall after the high was still to come.
- The market maker, as we read it, had the stops under the box in the morning and those over Tuesday's high after the decision. We cannot show whose orders filled either.
- The observer read the 08:30 close back and was wrong. The 10:00 candle took the low 13 pips further, and that is how we have written the day down.
What did this one Fed day show?
Four things, all on gold on 29 July.
- The 08:30 close back was not the low. The 10:00 candle went 13 pips further.
- The turn was under way before the decision. Price had come 55 pips by 13:00.
- The day's high came after both known minutes. It came at 15:00, and 74 pips went back by 16:00.
- We read it wrong, and the day stays on this page. A record of only the days that flatter would teach less.

Frequently asked questions
What time is the FOMC decision in 2026?
14:00 New York, with the press conference at 14:30. Our calendar files show it on 18 March, 29 April, 17 June, 29 July, 16 September and 28 October 2026. The Federal Reserve's own calendar also lists meetings ending 28 January and 9 December, which our files do not cover.
Does a close back before the FOMC decision hold?
Often not. On four Fed days from 29 April to 16 September 2026, on seven majors and gold, 31 edges of the Asian range that price had traded past closed back before 14:00. Price went past the furthest point again on 19 before 14:00 and on 5 more after it. Only 7 were not passed that day. It is a very small sample.
Did the Fed decision turn gold on 29 July 2026?
No. Gold's low came four hours earlier, at 10:00 New York, and by 13:00 it had already risen 55 pips with nothing from the Fed. The 14:00 candle added 38 pips and the high came at 15:00. We read that as the decision carrying a turn already under way, not making it.
How do you trade FOMC in forex?
We do not offer a rule. Guides suggest waiting for the press conference to finish, or trading the break after 14:00, and we have seen none with a dated record. Our own fixed-rule test around high-impact releases lost money after costs. Spreads widen in those minutes, so a stop is not a promise of its price.
