What Is CPI in Forex, and Why Does Price Jump?

Dylan Forexia6 min read

CPI in forex is the US Consumer Price Index, the monthly measure of how much prices paid by consumers have changed. It matters because inflation steers the Federal Reserve's interest-rate decisions, and rate expectations move the dollar. It lands at 08:30 New York, and the candle it lands on is several times an ordinary one.

What is CPI in forex diagram: consumer prices lead to rate expectations, which lead to the dollar
Diagram: the chain a CPI reading is supposed to start. The real days are below.

All times here are New York and a candle is named by the time it opens. The wider subject is in news trading.

What is CPI, and how is it measured?

CPI is the Bureau of Labor Statistics' index of the prices urban consumers pay for a fixed basket of goods and services, and the BLS's own CPI page defines it and gives the dates. Two cuts of it print together. The headline figure includes everything. The core figure leaves out food and energy, which swing most.

Each cut comes as a change on the month and a change on the year, so four numbers can print in the same minute. On 12 August 2026 our calendar has all four at 08:30. Which of them the market reads first is not something a chart can tell you.

Why does CPI move forex?

Because it is read as a message about interest rates. Higher inflation makes a central bank less willing to cut and more willing to raise. Higher rates tend to lift a currency. So the textbook says a hotter number than forecast lifts the dollar, and a cooler one weakens it. The forecast is already in the price before the release, so the move is meant to come from the gap.

That is the textbook seat: the retail trader with a number and a forecast. On CPI is the read we use, and it leaves the number alone for a reason the next section shows. How to trade CPI takes more reactions on EUR/USD and gold.

What did price do on a real CPI day? EUR/USD, 12 August 2026

On Wednesday 12 August 2026 the minute went both ways. We do not quote the print. The read does not use it, and what the candles did is enough to show why.

  • Before the release. The Asian Box was 13 pips, 1.15320 to 1.15446. By 08:29 price stood at 1.15463, already 2 pips over the top.
  • 08:30, the first minute. It opened at 1.15459 and ran 16 pips up to 1.15623. It then fell 13 pips under its open to 1.15329, which is 1 pip over the box's low and 2 pips short of Tuesday's low of 1.15312. It closed the minute at 1.15355.
  • 08:36. Back to 1.15505. The 15-minute candle closed at 1.15580, 12 pips over its open.
  • 09:00. The day's high, 1.15628, half a pip over the first minute's high.
  • 14:00. The low of the day, 1.15197, 43 pips under the high and five and a half hours after the release.
What is CPI in forex: EUR/USD on 12 August 2026. The 08:30 CPI candle runs from 1.15329 to 1.15623, the high of the day comes at 09:00 and the low, 1.15197, at 14:00
EUR/USD, 15-minute candles, Wednesday 12 August 2026. The first minute of US CPI went 16 pips over its open and 13 under it. The high of the day came at 09:00 and the low, 1.15197, at 14:00.

The textbook rule would have picked one direction, and the first minute took both. The candle closed higher and the day went lower. That is why the number alone is a poor guide. Our read is that a release adds a minute when orders on both sides arrive at once: News-Induced Liquidity. A chart cannot show whose orders they were.

When does CPI come out, and is it the US only?

The time is fixed at 08:30. The date is not. On our calendar the six US reports fell on a Friday, a Tuesday, a Wednesday, a Tuesday, a Wednesday and a Friday: 10 April, 12 May, 10 June, 14 July, 12 August and 11 September 2026. Take the date from the BLS schedule, as with the jobs report, which is also not always a Friday.

Other economies print their own inflation. On the same 12 August the euro area's harmonised index of consumer prices came out at 02:00, and our calendar marks it medium impact. It came hours before the US number, in the London morning. When a trader says CPI in forex without a country, the US report is nearly always the one meant, because it moves every dollar pair and gold at once.

Headline or core, month or year: which number moves price?

We cannot say. Four numbers print in the same minute and one candle holds the reaction to all of them. A chart cannot separate which figure the market read first, or whether the first minute's two directions were two readings of two numbers. That is an honest limit of any candle-based account, and it is why this page does not tell you the printed numbers: they would suggest a cause the data cannot show.

What the data does show is what a reader can use. The size of the candle is large against an ordinary morning. The direction of the first minute did not settle the day on 12 August. And the path after it was a long one, with the high of the day at 09:00 and the low of the day at 14:00.

How big is the CPI candle?

Larger than an ordinary 08:30 candle, and smaller than the jobs report's. We measured the 08:30 candle on the six CPI mornings from 10 April to 11 September 2026.

MarketMedian range on CPI mornings (pips)Largest of the sixAn ordinary 08:30 candle
EUR/USD22.354.86.7
GBP/USD29.460.38.3
USD/JPY37.587.37.6
Gold46.671.910.7

On gold we count $1 as 1 pip. The count is newsMoves.cpi830 in scripts/seo-counts.mjs. On EUR/USD the six reports ranged from 11.7 to 54.8 pips, so the median hides a spread of nearly five times. The average NFP move by pair gives the jobs report's figures, which run larger on every market.

Does the candle decide the day? Sometimes. It held the day's high or low on 12 of the 48 CPI market-days, six reports on eight markets, and on 12 August it held neither end on EUR/USD. The CPI stop hunt goes minute by minute through a morning when it held the low.

What do the three seats see on a CPI morning?

The Three Seats read the same candle three ways on 12 August.

  • Retail sees four numbers and a forecast. The aim is to be right about hotter or cooler. On 12 August the minute was right and wrong at once.
  • The market maker, as we read it, sees a known minute. Stops rest past the morning's levels, here the box's edges and Tuesday's low, and one candle can reach them. Nobody outside can see those orders.
  • The observer sees a size and a path. The candle was 29 pips against a 13-pip box, and the day's real move came hours later.

What does this not tell you?

It does not tell you what the printed numbers were, or how a given broker filled anyone. It is six CPI mornings on one feed, and the eight markets move on the same dollar, so the figures are not eight samples. A reversal seen afterwards is not a setup, and these days were picked for study. Forex news manipulation looks at whether any of this is aimed at anyone, and what FOMC means in forex takes the other release that moves the dollar on rates.

Frequently asked questions

What does CPI mean in forex?

CPI is the Consumer Price Index, the US government's monthly measure of how much prices paid by consumers have changed. Forex traders watch it because inflation steers the Federal Reserve's interest-rate decisions, and rate expectations move the dollar. It comes out at 08:30 New York.

What time is the CPI release?

08:30 New York, on a date the Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes in advance. It is not on a fixed weekday. On our calendar from April to September 2026 it came on 10 April, 12 May, 10 June, 14 July, 12 August and 11 September.

Is high CPI good or bad for the dollar?

The textbook says a hotter reading than forecast lifts the dollar, because it makes a rate cut less likely and a hike more likely. Price does not always follow it for long. On 14 July 2026 EUR/USD and gold both rose on the CPI candle, and on 12 August EUR/USD went both ways inside the first minute.

How many pips does CPI move EUR/USD?

On the six CPI mornings from April to September 2026 the 08:30 candle ranged a median 22.3 pips on EUR/USD, from 11.7 to 54.8, against about 6.7 on an ordinary morning. Six reports is a small sample, and size says nothing about direction.
